Born as Amal Alamuddin on February 3, 1978 in Beirut, Lebanon, Amal and her family were forced to flee Lebanon when she turned two as a result of the Lebanese Civil War. The middle-class family immigrated to Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, southeast England. Amal’s father, Ramzi Alam Uddin, holds an MBA from the American University of Beirut in Beirut Lebanon and he owns the travel agency COMET. Years after the war ended, Amal’s father returned to his country, Lebanon, in the early 1990s.
Amal’s mother, Bariaa Miknass, works for Pan-Arab newspaper al-Hayat as a foreign editor. Additionally, Amal’s mother is the founder of International Communication Experts, a PR firm specializing in event promotion, celebrity bookings, and publicity photography.
